Edit: I meant saturday, but sunday is fine as a starting date as well. Either day, depending on when everyone uploads their empires files. Hi everyone, the main game is not likely to start for at least another week, so we are putting together a quick pre-game game to let some of the new players fool around a bit in a sandbox with some more experienced players and learn a few things. It will not be a typical game; we will not play to the end, the galaxy will be small, and most likely there will be little or no fighting (unless both sides agree to it!). It will still be 5000 racial points. Here is the link to the game: pbw.spaceempires.net/games/prepropWe are aiming to start asap this weekend. Here is what you need to play: 1. Register an account on PBW 2. Apply to join the game 3. Choose a ship-set (see other posts on this forum for an explanation of what that is), Empire name, etc 4. Upload your Empire file (this is a distinct file created when you make a unique empire. To make your empire, start up SEIV, go to new game, go and create a new Empire. choose your ship set, use up your racial points, write some fluff about your race, etc etc. Then SAVE the empire. This will produce an empire file that can be uploaded to the PWB website. You will see the "upload Empire" option in the hosted game once I accept your application to join the game.

I know you`ve done this a million times but for me it`s the first and can´t upload my empire files :-(
My questions: 1."StartSE4" - with or without the mod? - I did it with the mod, don´t know if this matters or not. 2.I can set all the stuff you ask but have no idea what this means and what effects have on me - is it just role playing? it seems some traits are really interesting and depends on how you wanna play the game. - not actually a question just a note to my fellow newbies that we should try to understand the impact on this before the game starts decisions. 3. "design file name" - What is this?
But the one that really has me bogged: 4.Use your racial points (5000 racial points you say on the top) - I only have 2000so I spent all 2000 and then (-3000) but the system does not allow me to continue. Cannot figure out how to start with 5000 racial points. - I`m stuck here.
Thanks for the help!

Its all good Rob, just follow me 1.Boot the game up - with the mod active. 2. Fist things first, click on the "player settings" tab. Go to the bottom window "Racial Points for new Players". Select High. 3. In the players tab lets go to add new. Pick the empire picture you want, add your empire name, etc. 4. Environment - determines the kind of planet your race will start on. You get a huge bonus (five times as much colonization space) on a planet that has an atmosphere you can breath. So if you pick "oxygen", colonizing oxygen planets gives you a big bonus to the number of facilities you can build on the planet, as well as the population that can live on it. Home planet type determines what kind of world you will start on. It also determines the kind of colonization tech you will start with. So if you choose to start on an Ice world, at first you will only be able to colonize other ice planets, until you research rock and gas colonization. Culture: these provide bonuses and negatives to various abilities. For instance, click on "Berzerkers". If you go to cultural modifiers, you will notice that they get -5% to production, research, intelligence, -10% to trade, etc...but +10% to ground combat, +5% to space combat, etc. Basically meant for races that want to go on a murderous rampage rather than sign trade agreements. If you're not sure which one you would like to go with, you can just simply select neutral. On to characteristics, ever play D&D or an RPG like that? This is the same thing, but for an entire species rather than for a single character. the effects are on the right hand side. Note that they having increasing marginal costs at regular intervals. Now the cool stuff...advanced traits. If you want, you can spend a bunch of points to get special traits. Many of them unlock special technology tree, giving you access to cool, unique weapons or special technology you otherwise wouldnt be able to get. Which ones are good is open for debate. Aalien (the forum master) really loves the psychic weapon tree...it allows you to build a weapon that brainwashes the crew of an enemy ship! Personally, I prefer to eschew fancy unique weapons and go instead for advanced shipyard construction, or put more points into characteristics. And Propulsion experts. Propulsion experts is nothing less than amazing. Most of the other traits are pretty self-explanatory. Finally, under description you put your Role Playing Fluff. Other players will see this info when they meet you, and it will give them an idea of what to expect! Notice the Happiness Type at the bottom. It is not just role playing fluff, it determines how your people react to certain events. Note that it is normally quite hard to play on anything except Peaceful, unless you are planning to spend the entire game on a murderous rampage (then pick Bloodthirsty) or wall yourself off from the rest of the galaxy (then pick Neutral). Ok, when all that is done, click "create empire". This will take you to the main screen. Now click "Save to file." Click either yes or no on save designs, it does not matter. Click new empire file, and name your empire file. This creates your empire file. It is in your Proportions mod folder somewhere, I think under Empires. upload this file to the PBW game by clicking "upload Emp" in the upper right-hand corner of the PBW game page. Also, make sure to share with us the ship set file you are using, especially if you custom made it yourself. Otherwise, when we play the game, the game will randomly choose an existing shipset to display your ships each turn, with a different one chosen with each turn! So its good to make sure you have all the other player's ship sets in your game before the game starts. For this reason, for noob camp I'm playing with a vanilla ship set that you (and everyone else) already has. For the main game, I'm using a custom made ship set that I modified myself. That's all there is to it! Let me know if it works out for you, or if you run into any problems!

We will be starting up this game as soon as Nick stops being lazy and wakes up to get it started. If any other new players want in, join the game before nick starts it and be ready with your empire file to load it up as soon as Nick grants your approval.

Ok, This game is started. For all the new players, here are the steps to complete your turn:
1. Download the game file from the website. There will be a button in the top right hand corner of the game page on the PBW2 site that says download turn. Click that. 2. Extract the turn. The turn comes down as a .rar file, extract it. 3. Place the preprop.gam file in the savegame folder for SE4. 4. Launch SE4 and load the game 5. Select your empire and input your password. 6. Do your Turn, hit end turn when you are done. A .plr file will be generated in the savegame folder. 7. Upload the .plr file onto the play by web website. 8. Bug everyone else to get their turns done.

Already 4/6 people uploaded, off to a good start!
Just to warn people, I forgot to turn off randomly generated ai races, and I put the galaxy on small...so, beware, its crowded out there haha. Don't worry, the ai scripts are purely awful, except for some reason the neutral ai script, but they will never leave their home system, so no worries.

Pain!!! :-)
1.File downloades and unzipped into the savegames folder 2.Launch the game via the launcher 3.In the launcher, select the game and hit "load saved game" - ERROR "INVALID DATA FILES - THE DATA FILES CURRENTLY BEING USED DO NOT MATCH THE DATA FILES THAT WERE USED WHEN THIS GAME WAS STARTED. PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR HOST TO GET THE CORRECT DATA FILES". 4. Wondered why the "preprop.gam" had a [none] before its name, and supposed that it was created without the mod? - So i selected None in the left panel mod selector and tried to load the game - SAME RESULT 5.Maybe from within the game? loaded the game and tried it. - UNABLE TO LOAD GAME and then the path to the file.
6. Finally copied the savegame file to the MOD SAVEGAME subdirectory and it worked.
I wrote this log for future reference from anyone going through this - sorry for the delay in my turn.
