I recently played Eclipse for the first time and really enjoyed it. I'm always interested in 4x style board games, and thought I'd briefly suggest, that if you are able to find a group, to pick up and play a game of Eclipse. Or if you want an epic all-day game, to go with Twilight Imperium. Both games are a lot of fun and really capture different aspects of 4x. Eclipse is definitely the cheaper way to get into 4x board games though. Twilight Imperium is better at the soul and spirit of the space opera genre, but Eclipse really blends in worker placement and adds some really neat components. Plus it doesn't take a whole day to play. Our first play of Eclipse took five hours, but we're confident that now we have the rules down, that we could push through a game in 3 hours. Very fun! Anyway, you can find the games here and read more: boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/72125/eclipseboardgamegeek.com/boardgame/12493/twilight-imperium-third-edition

I haven't played Twilight Imperium(although my boardgame collecting friend has the game and wants to play...the rule book is quite intimidating), but I can second, third, and fourth Eclipse. That game is /fantastic/. It takes from 3-5 hours(depending on player count and rule knowledge) and is surprisingly simple. Would heartily recommend.

Twilight Imperium is an amazing game, and while the ruleset looks scary when you pull it out of the box, the gameplay is remarkable intuitive and flows very well. The biggest problem with the game is that it takes forEVER to play, and dominates a very large space. I have a lot of friends who love the game, and want to play a big game, but we'd all need to have a weekend off!

Solvani, Adama, Interstellar Trade Company, Thalon and I played eclipse several weeks ago. Its remarkably like a simplified version of Vanilla Space Empires. The parallels are uncanny, in fact.

Well, 4x space games(and in fact, many games in general) are literally offshoots of boardgames, using computers to make tedious calculations. So the fact that there are lots of similarities is not unwarranted!

You owe it to yourself to play a good boardgame.

Risk is a good gateway game, use it to addict new people and get them willing to try even better games
