I've truncated most of the dregs from the list - there are a surprising number of 4x games in development. Of all the games since Space Empires IV, these are the only ones that offer any hope of eventually supplanting it for depth. They also tend to follow the mandate set out by Master of Orion II, which really remains my favorite of any 4x game, rather than trying to turn themselves into a real-time action based 4x bowl of mushy breakfast cereal. predestinationgame.com/This one seems to be the best of the bunch. It has some really neat new features, aims towards realism, and is still turn-based. Nearing release. starlords-game.com/site/This one looks neat, but is really really buggy and not well designed - according to many. I've not tried it but it tends towards simplification rather than depth. Not perfect, but it might get there eventually, with mods.

I'm really looking forward all the 4x space themed games out there, seems there's a rush for 4x games and particularly the space setting. What I really don't like are half baked games and the now common practice of developers of selling you the game when its even in alpha. I'm really looking forward to GalCiv but 100 dollars for the alpha access seems crazy. On a similar matter, I enjoy space based strategy games but not necessarily turn based. Look at this guy videos on his game, it awesome to see it grow and im really looking forward this game ltheory.com/Watch the developer videos on Youtube, I watched them all just to see the game unfold on a month to month basis for over a year> www.youtube.com/user/LimitTheory/featured

I like the development here, it'll certainly appeal to a lot of people but my natural preference leads towards a really tactical turn-based system that plays out like a board game, rather than the more realistic real-time action that this project offers.
It does look really good though, I watched a few of his videos and the game is really cool looking... sort of a 4x meets star citizen? SO pretty and elegant.

i definitely prefer turn based games, RTS are getting barely like "Build more structures you can, research more techs you can, build units till the limit allowed is reached and send them massively to destroy the enemy base", even if i must admit that for 4x games it's a bit different, anyway, i'm still in search of some good replacement fo se4, but the few game i found time to play, i played it for few turns and got bored, they do not give me the feeling se4 did (and was not easily moddable as it is), the only one able to keep me playing till i reached it's end was the old Haegemonia, now. since i run Ubuntu and Mac OS X my occasions to meet a good game are decreasing drastically.

These two games - Yes and Yes! I am very hopeful for both of them. I grabbed Horizon; however, I feel it has been quite the let down and have not bothered playing it in some time. I've been following both of these games and am exceptionally hopeful. Have you been following Galactic Civilizations III? I think that has some potential as well.

Have you been following Galactic Civilizations III? I think that has some potential as well. I have, but it's a ways from release. I'll probably start following it in the fall. I am hopeful about it though, it could offer a reasonable next gen to SEIV, with a bit of tweaking. II certainly didn't lack for depth.

GalCiv III is releasing their alpha on steam. I watched the video, here is the link, but I don't know... I literally feel like I'm just watching GalCiv II. Maybe I'm wrong? Here is a video for Stardrive 2 which, despite the shitstorm of Stardrive, looks fairly good. Though, I am _really_ not into that ground combat play. I have very little interest in "tactical" play for ground combat, and I'm a ground pounder fan! Instead, I'd really prefer to see a Strategic or Operational level of combat. Where a globe is broken into regions and you simple seek to take over a region, then another, or divide your forces and attempt to take all the regions at once or really any multitude in between. I wish I could articulate it visually, but I think that would more accurately describe the combat without having to get into SUPER details. Instead, you could divide your means (ie, troops, fighters, etc) to regions. They can battle it out with whatever is there, whatever defenses exist, etc. I don't know. I might mention this on the predestination forum. Either way, those two games are out and about. I find myself lacking a good strategy game to play right now. I'd prefer something space 4x, but it seems nothing out there is really catching my attention. Anyone else dealing with this? Besides you folk who are going to get into CK2
