Never managed to give it a try...actually, I've never even played masters of Orion! I found a copy of Space Empires II when I was like, 10 years old, and that's been pretty much it for me in 4X space haha.

I've played it fairly extensively. It's good. But it's far from perfect. Combat is not very good, most think it's terrible. I am neutral towards it, but it's not really very fun. I really enjoy some parts, and dislike other bits. It's certainly a really good sample and anyone who wanted a 4x-lite experience would benefit from trying it out.
They also added some really need playstyles to each race - they all feel very unique, so it's very replayable. But the AI isn't very good. As with Civilization 4 & 5, in order to compensate they just give the computer an outright pure economy bonus at higher levels rather than make it smarter.
Still, very worth playing, even given the flaws.

Endless space is great in the economy aspects of the game and the planetary setup of star systems is an excellent balance between depth and ease of use, but as Mr. Norak mentioned, the combat is complete tripe. Ship design is purely linear progression of weapon techs, with no real ability to mix it up too much. You can still design ships, but it's only in the ratios of weapon and defence types
