Biological Description:
The Tau Ceti Empire consists of 3 races. The leadership and most of the upper class consists of a humanoid, reptilian based species that calls itself The Race. The Scientific and Engineering support is provided by a group of humans. The Manual Labour positions are populated by a species called the Hallessi.
The Race is a reptilian species, approximately 3 ft in height on average and reddish brown in colour. They walk on their 2 hind legs and have a shortened tail stub, which still serves some use for balance during athletics, but is otherwise of little use. Their front appendages have evolved opposable thumbs and shorter claws to enable better use of tools. They have an annual mating season which lasts 4-7 days. During this time all societal functions shut down and only mating is pursued by all adult members of the race.
The Hallessi are another reptilian species. They have 6 appendages in total, the rear 2 of which are used for walking and the front 4 for manipulating their environment. They average 7-8 ft in height and possess great muscular strength when compared to the other species of the Tau Ceti Empire. The Hallessi are not skilled in the art of language, but can understand more complex language groups with some difficulty. They also follow an annual mating cycle similar to the Race.
The Human component to the empire is a small group of standard humans that were more recently conquered. They are extremely creative and skilled in the art of research and development. They do not follow a standard mating season and rear their children in small family groups. A small component of the humans have been developing psychic and telekinetic senses in recent generations.
Society Description:
The Tau Ceti Empire is split into a strict caste structure based on the species a member belongs to. The Race provides the leadership, skilled labour, merchants and administration for the empire. This makes up the vast majority of the population of the Empire, approximately 80%. Their members have the full individual freedoms granted by the emperor and his bureaucracy. The eggs from the female members of the race are taken directly after they are laid and hatched in communal hatcheries. These young are then raised to adulthood in these hatcheries before being released into society at large.
The Hallessi, which make up approximately 17% of the population, make up the majority of the manual labourers in the Empire. Individual Hallessi members are generally owned by large corporations who are mandated to provide them living quarters and generous amounts of food in exchange for their labours. These corporations have great incentive to keep them in good health and happy as the cost to buy and train a Hallessi member is extremely high. The Halessi members generally enjoy this arrangement as their needs are met and their average cognitive ability is not high enough to strive for the more intellectual positions. The Hallessi young are also raised in hatcheries similar to the race’s before they are sold off at adulthood.
The Human contingent has a unique arrangement inside the empire. In order to suppress their rebellious nature and improve their productivity, the emperor at the time of conquest granted the humans on Home a large area of land in which to live under a self governing model. In return for this, the humans had to agree to focus their efforts on research and development and to share all their findings with the Race. This human zone is generally avoided as the technological differences and cultural differences frighten the other 2 species. The Humans make up a small portion of the Empire’s total population, but is responsible for the vast majority of technological advancement inside the empire.
The Race and the Hallessi are very resistant to technological advancement, but after the most recent conquest of the Human colony, they have recognized the need for advancing their technology in order to expand in the Galaxy. To balance the need for advancement of technology with the resistance in society, the race created the Human Enclave to foster technological development and a select council of Elders of the Race who decide which technologies will be distributed amongst the general population of the Race and the Hallessi each generation. This has the benefit of making the exchange of technological ideas very quick and easy as it is centered in on location with all the scientists, improving the output of these smaller numbers.
General History
After the great unification of Home, the Race lived in peace for many thousands of years. Technological development was slow and the society of the Race did not change very much. They eventually reached the ability to achieve sublight travel and mounted 2 large colonization fleets to travel to the nearest stars with habitable planets.
On the first world they discovered the Hallessi. This was a primitive sentient species. Their language skills were still developing and they had just started to use stone tools and control fire. The conquering of the Hallessi was quick and easy, and due to their strength some were sent back to Home for use as labourers.
On the second world a medium sized human colony was encountered. An invasion was launched and resistance was much stronger than the initial fleets thought would be encountered. The war lasted for decades and much of the planet was rendered uninhabitable. The survivors eventually surrendered to the Race and the Human agreement was formed. The damage to the planet was too extreme and the planet was abandoned.
After their experience with the Humans, the Emperor at the time ordered that the imperial fleet would be scuttled and the Race would not continue exploring space until they could guarantee a greater technological edge and support their colonies. He also established the Human Colony on home and technological integration committees, greatly increasing the rate of technological advancement in the Empire. Soon after this order, contact was lost with the colony on Hallessi. The cause of this lack of contact was never determined and is a mystery to this day.
A recent discovery of Warp Gate technology has sparked the Emperor to reverse the moratorium on space exploration and expand the reach of the Empire. Colonies can now by easily reinforced and supported. The cause of the loss of the Hallessi colony will also finally be determined....
