Despite loosing several people, I still expect 2-6 more interested players to join. In fact, it is because of two committed players that we are delaying the start to next week at their request. In theory, a total of 7 additional people are still "committed" to joining, but have not yet signed up. A few of those are basically AWOL, though.

We are not going to use that exact map, that was just a sample that I wanted feedback on. I agree that we need more systems for greater than 8 people and it is an easy toggle to get the computer to generate them. The plan would be a completely random map that no one has looked at in the map editor with approx. 10 systems per empire in it.

More variety is never bad and I loved the new planet graphics, except for some particularly weird stuff like cubic planets and other "otherworldly" forms. You know that package has some pretty bizarre stuff like giant heads, dont you? On the other hand, a cubic world would be a perfect homeworld for a borg-like race...

Ya there is some weird stuff in the package. The giant heads will not spawn. To get a picture to spawn, an entry for it needs to be in the SectType.txt file. I tried to pick what I thought were the best looking pictures and added some "generic descriptions". Cubic planets will spawn for laughs and interesting RP and a couple of the descriptions were obviously written at 2 am on a saturday.

To add to that, If anyone has an awesome planet description that they want included, let me know and I can change one of them.

To add more detail to what was done with the balanced map:
-I added many pictures from the planet pack to equalize the planet variety. This allowed the computer approx. equal chances to generate a rock/gas/ice or none/other atmosphere type. There is now 6 different tiny, small, medium and huge models for each atmosphere type of rock and ice and 4 of large planets. There are 6 different small, medium and huge and 4 different large models for each atmosphere type of Gas planets. The different number of large planets is due to shear laziness and doesn't affect the balance of planets, just fewer large planets when compared to the other 4 sizes.
-To balance the None/Gas concern, I forced the map generator to spawn a certain percentage of moons to be none and planets to be huge/large gas planets. All other planets are generated randomly, the gas planets atmospheres are also random. I believe it is close to balanced, not perfect, but better than the stock generator. This does not stop the RNG from screwing over some people on placement either.
-The planet pack has approximately 900 additional models from stock. The only ones currently used in the "balanced map" are select planets that I thought had good art....and a few of the cube worlds, mostly because the RP for those could be hilarious. The awful giant head planets....yeah those are not used.
-Depending on my time, I may add some of the other cool warp point and sun models to the file map.
-The map will be 100% randomly generated using the in game map generator. We will not be manually editing the map and will only see it in the preview menu of the map generator in game. The map will be tripolar and the number of systems will depend on the number of players. We are aiming for a ratio of approx. 10 systems per empire.
-I am making a custom list of system names to use at this time. If there are any requests for system names, post them here.
-If anyone has more questions on my methodology, I will gladly answer them. I can also post the additional settings files if others want to generate these maps on their own.

I've sent Nick a very large list of system names I've made some years ago for use in SE5. Besides the stock names, I've included many lists from names generators using various patterns.
