As much as we all love SE IV, it has plenty of limitations that induce no end of hair-pulling. Let's discuss other options for 4X RP gaming. The first thing is to see what else is out there and in development. Here is a spreadsheet of space-based 4X games. Please add/edit/expand.

This is an amazing list. I just wish I could have something to add to it...I've spent too many years buried in the Space Empires series...but I am definetly willing to entertain other potential platforms in the future.

One quick note is Lords of the black sun is horrible. IMO it makes Star Drive look amazing in comparison, which while it had a lot of potential (re startdrive) it was abandoned.

I've heard it has good diplomacy, government, and intelligence features. One of the things I'd like to do is beyond finding a replacement game is to collect a list of features/changes to possible create a new game or mod. I have about two pages of notes for things I'd like to see in a space 4X. I'll try to make them semi-coherent and post them.

I downloaded it and gave it a shot after it was initially released and it just seemed really simplistic and half baked.

I'm willing to help work through and evaluate the top options here (in comparison to SE4) Star Ruler 2 & Distant Worlds, which seem the best currently playable and released options on the list. Star Ruler 2 is cheaper, so we might start there, if anyone is interested?

Distant Worlds is real time, and IMO kind of over rated.
I own SR2 but I'm pretty sure that is still in development. I need to sit down with it and give it a try.

Yeah real-time doesn't work, has to be something we can push into long-term turn based diplomacy.

I just read a post about star ruler 2 claiming that the game just got a big bugfix and content patch and that (supposedly) it's basically in a complete state. Picked it up now and giving it a whirl.
Edit:
Not turn based.
Still, a very well tuned and fun game, so far.

Star Ruler 2, further analysis: it attempts to make the 4x genre less deep and makes some undesirable changes, although there are some merits still. It feels a bit like the difference between Civ 4 and Civ Rev. Interesting, graphically compelling, but childlike in comparison to SEIV.

For all its flaws, its just so hard to find a game that matches SE's a) customizability, b) depth c) adaptability. And yeah, turn based is kind of a must.

I tweaked the list a little bit - A bunch of the top entries I tested out and just don't work (not turn based, or not RP possible or grand strategy games) - provided that's what we're looking for? Basically an updated SE4 (which is an updated MOO2).

I've been reviewing predestination information and it seems the most promising of all the listed games. It is due to enter alpha/beta/early release at any moment now and promises to be the only game which has all of the requirements. It also comes out in early release format fairly soon.
It seems to have more depth than SE4 (in depth and micromanagement ability) and also is pretty much the ONLY 4x that will have a PBEM style of turn play we can fit into a long epic game like this one. Everything else about it just appears to be fantastic, and the game is designed with modding in mind.
