Lord Karo's claws clicked along the deck plating of his quarters, a steady rythym as he paced back and forth. An aging D'Kali noble, Karo had been chosen by the Archon to lead and govern the new colonies in the Asteria system. He turned back to the charts laid out across the table, his ebon claw tracing over the script work of the scribe-slaves. They would have to come up with better names than 'Asteria VI' and the like, but for now they sufficed. The hum of the colony ship's engines vibrated through the soles of his orange-scaled feet, and the D'Kali lord took a moment to close his eyes and just take in the sensation. It would feel odd, he thought, once they landed on their new colony and the gentle thrum was no longer there. Karo imagined he would likely have trouble sleeping without it for the first few nights.
Karo's head swivelled as a curt thump sounded against the door, moments before a stocky, green-scaled D'Kali entered. He was wearing thinner armour plate typical of a ship's commander, the dull metal functional and only partially decorated along the shoulder plates with his clan and Hegemony crests. "I was wondering when you would get here, Lurix." the older drake chuckled. Lurix just smiled a little, though it was forced.
"Have you given any more thought to my plan, Lord Karo?" he wondered, slowly walking over until he could see the charts his superiour was pouring over.
"I have, Lurix. And I don't like it. I would rather have you in force with the rest of the squadron when we jump" Karo glanced again over another leaf of parchment detailing the reports from the last scouts into Asteria.
"I'd rather not do this either, but we can't let those blasphemous Adherents completely surprise us, Karo. You jump this ship in blind, and you are risking the lives of every pilgrim aboard"
Karo snarled and looked back at his subordinate, lips curling to reveal his toothy maw. He knew the captain was right but the lord did not appreciate being criticized so openly. "Do you think I don't know that you whelp? That is why I want every capable warrior at my side. Roxal willing, we'll all continue to fight long after this jump"
"And Roxal willing that will still be the case" Lurix growled back, "but the Gods cannot show you what is on the other side of that jump point. I can."
The two D'Kali stared at each other snarling for what seemed like hours before Karo snapped his jaw in a barking growl, teeth closing millimetres from Lurix' snout before he turned away to stare out the small window of the cabin. After a few more moments of uncomfortable silence, Karo glanced back over his shoulder. “How many do you need?”
“A S’Kaot can be crewed with three D’Kali. Not well, but it will do for this mission” Lurix replied without hesitation. The captain had given it a great deal of thought. “Pilot, engineer and gunner. I could do it with just two but-“
“If you’re so intent on getting killed, I won’t let you do it without at least trying to put up a fight,” Karo interrupted, before turning back to his table. “Alright. Yourself and two other warriors take the First S’Kaot. You jump in, transmit the fastest sensor reads of your life, and you jump back to us Lurix. Do you understand me?”
The verdant-scaled D’Kali nodded in salute. “Understood, my Lord. I’ll make sure you know what you’re getting in to.” Lurix turned to leave, but had barely made it to the door when his commander spoke up again.
“Lurix… Xar’son guide your steps, and Roxal keep you” The scout captain didn’t reply, only pausing for a moment before leaving the Lord’s quarters.

It had been more then seven days since the First S’Kaot drifted silently away from the D’Kali flotilla, the huddle of scarlet hulls mere pinpricks against the massive colony ship they were protecting. Lord Karo was walking back through the passenger deck, making his checks on the pilgrims when a thin, blue whelp of a D’Kali came skittering around the corner, claws catching on the deck. “Lord Karo! Lord Karo, we’ve received…from the S’Kaot,” he panted, a piece of script cluched in his hand.” the serf panted as he came to a stop in front of Karo.
He hesitated as he looked at the page in the slave's hand, his breath slow and measured even as a feeling of dread welled up within his upper gut. Slowly extending a hand, he took the leaf of parchement and traced his eyes over the message from Lurix. His last message. Karo felt the feeling of dread begin to burn into a holy rage as he read over the transcribed report, his lips curling into a snarl as an almost youthful hatred and desire for battle swelled from the pain of losing the captain. "Send for my shuttle," he growled, voice firm and commanding. "I'm taking command from the First Da'ke. Send word to the rest of the fleet to begin jump prep...we're taking Asteria."
