Jarl Jankins was top of his class in the academy, independent and headstrong; and even more importantly: had no family. And so was a natural selection for the first wave of scout craft sent to explore the nearby systems.
After two hops from the homeworld, Jarl reported back to Alliance HQ that he detected a gravity anomaly through a newly discovered wormhole. He was ordered to investigate by the director of astronomical research as it might be something interesting.
It was some time before the signal was received back from Jarl after transiting the wormhole. Distorted to un-intelligibility as it echoed and spun around the event horizon of the black hole on the other side, it took extensive reconstruction before it could be understood.
The last recorded words of Captain Jarl Jankins will be remembered for a long time in Alliance History: "You may think this is interesting, but I think this sucks." Posthumously promoted to Commodore (rear-half), he will be remembered as the first Terran to be killed via singularity.
