I just realized that we never did an introduce yourself thread to get to know everyone. This probably stems from a large number of us know each other in real life to various degrees, but lets introduce everyone for the people we have picked up.
I am a Mechanical Engineer based in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. I work for a drilling equipment manufacturer and our main product is Top Drive systems for drilling rigs. I grew up mostly in Calgary, but have also lived in Edmonton and Vancouver area when I was young. I am Married (This Year) with no kids...yet anyway, own a house, living the suburban dream.
I watch a decent amount of sports, mostly Calgary flames hockey and Calgary Stampeders football (season ticket holder). I played hockey when I was a kid, but I am far to lazy for that now.
I started playing Space Empires when the player behind the Dominion of Zabeara dragged me into a freeware version of space empires 2. We played that for many hours with a rotating cast of his brothers, at least as far as the freeware version let us tech up. I distinctly remember naming my ship classes after condiments in that version.
Over the years we moved onto the demo for space empires 3 and then caved and bought the full version of space empires 4. It has been our go to turn based game ever since.

I am a meat Popsicle.
Or, that guy above me is my brother-in-law. But don't worry, that doesn't give him any favoritism points, as he betrayed me pretty hard in the last game we played of Eclipse.
I too live in Calgary and enjoy short walks to the store and warm pizza.
I have a handful of degrees in Geisteswissenschaften, and like to cook things.
I am currently an unemployed Jr.High and Highschool teacher.
I write books in my spare time.
My first game like this was likely Civilization I, in the early 90's. Although Master of Orion would really teach me the way to 4x.

Do I get brownie points from the other if I glass the other in-law's Homeworld?
I don't know anyone here personally or over the net, although I do have some SE game's going on with few.
I'm from Finland, Helsinki to be slightly more precise and I'm a chemical engineer. Very much into strategy games since the very late '90s (although more toward WW2) and I've first tried the SE series, maybe 10ish years ago, singleplayer on either SE2 or 3. Hazy memory... anyway, bought 4 from Steam so I could finaly try out the multiplayer. Surprisingly good.
Also a hockey (and football) fan, hardly a surprise in Finland. Not as crazy as Canucks but still.
Incidentaly, I caught the Flames v Sharks on TV earlier today. Couple of fans in Oilers shirts with McDavid stapled to the back cracked me up. Priceless. Flames definetly showing the Oilers how to do a rebuild... (so far in the season anyway)

I'm a Lawyer from Charlotte, North Carolina. I got into these Proportion games after I saw a thread on /r/4xgaming on reddit. I had previous experience with Space Empires V and I always heard good thing about SEIV and it sounded like a good experience. Probably my favorite 4x games are Civ II-IV and Space Empires. While I know Civ V is very popular, I never liked it in the least. I play all sorts of other games, with one of myfavorites being Dota 2. I used to play a good bit of EVE Online and got to know Sylos (Vyrex) through that game. Add me on steam! (click for my profile)

The 1 unit per tile makes into a kind of poor man's Panzer General II, which is one of my all-time favourite games.

I grew up in Rio de Janeiro but I currently live near Ribeirão Preto, Brazil. I studied Cultural Anthropology/Sociology at College and I work at a State Bank. I'm currently preparing for the entrance exam of the brazilian diplomatic service. I'm married for almost 10 years and I've two small kids.
I began playing a shareware version of SE3 in 1998 and went on to SE4 immediately after launch in 2000. I played a lot of SE5 too and even made my attempt at modding. I've tried a lot of turn based 4X games, but none of them captivated me like good old SE. I play a lot of Paradox's grand strategy titles too.
I've never been very interested in sports but I love genealogy, history and pen-and-paper RPGs.

Late to the game, but here we go.
I am a Safety Scientist who lives in Rockville, MD, USA. As part of my job I'm involved in the safety engineering of US Submarines. I've spent 6 years in the US Navy as a Missile Technician. I also used to teach physics at a HS in Washington state. I have an odd assortment of degrees but one is high enough for me to be titled a scientist.
Hobbies: Love 4x games, play WWIIOnline, I run marathons and hope to start competing in Iron Man triathlons in a couple years (It takes a lot of training). I'm one of the mods for /r/Baltimore and hosted a giant global reddit meetup day party a few years ago that drew in a few hundred people (and created one infamous photo).
I played Space Empires IV back in the 2003-2005 time frame. I made a couple ship sets based on the Wing Commander series. I got into this particular game when I saw a post on reddit in the 4xgaming sub and was invited in to take the spot of a lapse player

To celebrate my 300th post, I'll chime in here. I live in a little place called Brooks, Alberta, but i'm from Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. I like hiking, skiing, road trips, reading, and casually simulating genocidal conquest on a galactic scale. I've played space empires since about 1997 (Space Empires II) (when I was, like, 11). I also like pretty much any game made by paradox interactive, and Panzer General II. Also anything that simulates a tank or a mech. I currently only play Space Empires because I work like, 70 hours a week. I have a masters degree and am starting law school in September, so for my own good I really hope someone kills the Dominion by then

Also anything that simulates a tank or a mech I highly suggest giving Warthunder a try. It is way better than world of tanks as it uses real simulator style damage models so you need to aim for weak spots in the armor model and crew members and components inside to knock one out. I also wish there was a decent recent mech game. I was very unimpressed with MWO.

I also wish there was a decent recent mech game. I was very unimpressed with MWO. Mechs and Mercs: Black Talon just came out. Mixed reviews. Also, HAWKEN seemed to have a lot of buzz a while back.

I was in a MWO unit for a while, I quit when they announced they were bringing in third person view.
