2408.8 - Orbit of Bursaru (AKA Terra Nova)
Lord Mugsho Gurna was proud to have been selected to command the most crucial operation since the Sethulkra had joined the spare-faring species. He looked through his viewscreen on the purple planet a few hundred thousand kilometers away. It was strange to think an entire civilization could have developed entirely on the surface, out of the security of the underground. Weird creatures...
"Sensors detect enemy fleet approaching, my Lord. 25 Tau Ceti Wilwood Class Missile Frigates, 42 Alliance Missile Frigates of varied designs, most of them already on the database. 12 orbital space yards and a small assortment of non-armed vessels. 16 Missile Satellites in orbit but only 3 Missile Launchers on the ground. They also have 44 regiments of mechanized infrantry."
No cloaked units then. It was strange that the Tau Ceti wouldn't have sent the Alliance more than those 25 old ships. It was almost as if they didn't care about Bursa and had let their allies to the wolves. Not that it bothered him.
The head of House Zobokx examined the layout of enemy units. While the Alliance fleet had grouped around the planet, the Tau Ceti had moved to hit the Sethulkra fleet in the right flank. It wouldn't be a stroll in the garden.
"Order corvettes 34 to 64 to engage the Tau Ceti. Tell them to close in as fast as they can. Don't let them fire a second missile salvo. The rest of the fleet move at full speed ahead toward the planet. We have to open space to the troop transports."
The high pitch whirring sound characteristic of High Energy Discharge Weapons began. All sethulkra onboard were required to put auricular protectors to avoid damage to their fragile and sensitive hearing organs. After weapons were charged, all communication had to be written through the onboard computer network.
The tension mounted as the enemy ships were about to enter range. Lord Gurna had a very dark tone of skin, much different from the beige and ochre skins of the rest of the crew. His scent was also unique and grew more intense and intimidating the more nervous he was.
A large portion of the small corvette blew away with the strong impact of multiple enemy missiles. Though the shields and armor had absorbed most of the impact, two engines and one of the beam weapons had been disabled.
Lord Gurna pressed his side with one of his legs and noticed the cartillage was very swollen. He felt his head spin as he tried to keep his eyes open.
"Still 32 Alliance frigates and 13 Tau Ceti vessels. We've lost 29 ships so far" the sensor officer announced.
"37 of them for 29 of ours, it's going worse than we had anticipated" he answered.
He watched the show of lights, beams, sounds and explosions for three more hours. Empty derelict hulls and floating bodies were everywhere.
"We've lost 15 more vessels. 4 Tau Ceti and 2 Alliance ships remain, along with a number of unarmed vessels currently attempting to leave orbit. Corvettes 5, 9, 16 and 66 request permission to pursue and destroy them."
"Permission granted. Do not let a single one of them escape. Destroy the space yards too. Initiate planetary bombardment!"
For about half an hour, the planetary shields held their own. With the constant pounding of HED weapons, however, it eventually gave in, exposing ground facilities and missile launchers.
The strong scent of tension in the bridge had dissipated. Lord Mugsho Gurna felt his side hurt but he was serene right now.
