"This is an outrage! I demand audience with the Imperatii!" bellowed Hispra No'Tala, simultaneously focusing the entirety of his telepathic powers on the soldier blocking the formal bridgeway to the Throne Chamber.
The only sign of words or psionics having any effect at all was a single blink of the soldier's nictitating membranes as he continued to hold Hispra's gaze. The soldier was of Rivaldar rank and had been trained in advanced mental defenses at the military facilities of Qua'rapa. His loyalty to the Intendant was unshakable. For all his own considerable abilities, Hispra might as well have been trying move a moon.
"The Imperatii has retired to more comfortable surroundings. I am given to understand It finds the capital to be too ... frenetic, at present." The Rivaldar replied, not even mentioning the invasive mindpush. Was there a trace of amusement in that flat monotone?
"My tail, you insolent ekblat! So'Weia will not get away with this! I am the leader of a First Family and I will not be treated like a common ground-dweller!" Hispra began to lean closer to the slightly shorter Rivaldar as his anger grew, then became conscious of the array of armed guards standing behind the other Solvani. They stood imperturbably with the cool nonchalance and casual order of men who had seen more real combat than parades. Presumably that was why they had so easily supplanted the Imperatii's Guardians. "The Presumptive and the First Families will not stand for this."
"You will find, Hispra No'Tala, that the Presumptive have joined the Imperatii on Its extended holiday to Soma'Ta, and that many of the First Families have already seen the wisdom of this new path, as has the Conclave."
Hispra opened his mouth to bear his fangs before remembering he'd kept them filed for many years. Like his docked tail and trimmed claws, it was a sign of high class, that he need no longer hunt, or fight, or jump amongst the trees. He suddenly felt quite defenseless.
After a moment, noting Hispra's failed attempt to intimidate, the Rivaldar opened his own mouth wide, revealing glistening teeth that had certainly not been cut short.
"Perhaps it would be best if my pack escorts you to ... safer accommodation."
