The Kortl massacre of Bujuknazi shattered whatever tension remained in Dominion society about the conduct of the war. 38 Million Dominion subjects, hastily abandoned during a general retreat and trusted to the beta accords, were slaughtered by a Kortl fleet. With the help of D'kali allies, the Kortl perpetrators were shortly after destroyed in the second ambush of the Deneb warpoint (25 Dominion ships lost, several D’kali, over 60 Kortl). But that victory was not justice, did little but provide temporary salve to the multitude of Kortl insults and transgressions that required vengeance.
Admiral Huzzak-ai, chosen Lord of the combined fleet, stood on the bridge of the 1st Azh, his chosen flagship, staring ahead at the blue whirlpool dominating the viewing screen. The wormhole stood before the fleet, like a gate to hell. On the other side were the Kortl lines and the enemy's fortress-world of Talos, and beyond...Aso itself. The end of the war.
To reach it, to achieve equal measures of victory and vengeance, which had indeed merged in meaning in this now most ruthless of conflicts, the Dominion had mustered the greatest portion of its strength and assembled it to this point. Years of preparation went into this great operation about to begin. Over 200 Dominion ships of all kinds, hundreds of thousands of sailors, over 50,000 heavy assault tanks, and over a million light infantry waited in position on the far end of the Dartmouth-Groomsbridge warpoint, backed by the rapidly arriving fleet of D’kali allies. The flower of Dominion society, the highest expression of its will, mustered into one place with one purpose: to kill Kortl. To see that justice is done. The greatest force the galaxy had yet seen, all waiting on Huzzak-ai’s word.
‘’Open a channel to all ships.’’ Huzzek commanded. He hesitated at first. The patriarchs had provided him with a standard pre-operation speech. He threw it away:
''Warriors of the Dominion: Today, we set upon our holy task: we will teach the Kortl one thing: no one may enter that land, which is by AZHA’s will, protected by the Dominion’s hand!
Huzzek then said the fateful lines that would rock Dominion society to its core and change the course of history: ‘’Do you remember when the Kortl attacked our defenseless colony ships and massacred over a million innocent civilians? AND THE PATRIARCHS TURNED AWAY!
Do you remember when the Kortl attacked our honoured D’kali allies, the finest heathens ever known, in betrayal in Dusseldorf? AND THE PATRIARCHS TURNED AWAY! But our friends stayed fast and loyal, despite such hesitation.
Do you remember when the Kortl lashed out at the peaceful trade company? What did the Patriarchs do? THEY TURNED AWAY!
They could not turn away forever, for they could not avoid the ravenous monster when they struck at our own worlds. Without declaration, without warning. Treachery. And I ask you, did the Patriarchs agree to abandon the beta accords? No, and who paid for that? OVER 60 MILLION Dominion subjects felt the hot burn of Kortl rippers and the cold indifference of the Patriarchs.
My brothers, the time has come to rise now! Rise up and hear the call! No more defensive operations. No more ambushes. No more commerce raiding! Today it starts, the rage of the Dominion. And by AZHA's will, it shall flow and like a deluge drown our enemies!. You have been chosen to bring fate to the enemy, and we will bring it to them across that warpoint, or wherever they choose to have their lives undone. No mercy! No prisoners! Purge the filthy Kortl wherever you see it; cleanse its filth and restore righteousness to this space. Sanctify it with the holy blood of the martyrs just as has been done with the lands of Bujuknazi and the space of Dusseldorf, and the skies of Diamond-iz.
''
With that, the combined Dominion fleet jumped into the Kortl lines, without scouting beforehand, but trusting their fate to the element of surprise and the hands of the maleki (and their weight in numbers).
The Kortl had been waiting for them across the warpoint. The resulting battle:
Kortl ships lost: 164 ships
Dominion Ships lost: 95
D'kali ships lost: 4
