Thinking about playing a game of SEV (I've played a few computer matches a few years ago).
Can anyone recommend any good mods?

Unfortunately, I haven't played much of it.

I played around with stock a bunch when the game first came out, but never really did much with it beyond that. I know there was a lot of modding that started, but never in any point of development that I was able to try them out. I really do wish it had been more successful, I love some of the features like sensor ranges, real-time combat and expanded diplomacy

SE5 most problematic issue was the absurd amount of time it required to process each turn. There was other annoying bugs too. Some people released a lot of interesting mods on Spaceempires.net, Captain Kwok's Balance Mod being the most popular.
I released a version of Proportions to SE5 myself. I worked on it for more than a year but gave up when the last patch to SE5 introduced a mod breaking bug.

I'm sure I speak for many of us when I say we appreciate the effort. SE5 had a lot of potential.

I released a version of Proportions to SE5 myself. Nice! It would be awesome if you updated it at some future point. I'm pretty far in a recent SEV game I started vs AI. However in Balance mod I just realized that the parts required to make ring/sphere worlds no longer fit on fully upgraded Baseships and just putting them on spacestations built in place doesn't seem to work. Oh well.

I really enjoy SE5. Always have.
I am currently playing Balance Mod Small Systems, which allows turns to be processed quicker.
I've been wanting to get a TCP/IP game going for a while, but haven't found someone with the appropriate time available.

I really enjoy SE5. Always have. I actually enjoyed it too. I hoped it would be patched up to become a great game eventually. The only reason I gave it up was because Malfador gave it up.

Well, I've never played a multiplayer match of SE5, but if some of you want to spend an hour or two playing one and save it and perhaps start it later - I'm all for it!
