Some problems I'm very pleased to be afflicted with. This is one of them. We are already at 14 players.14 Space Empires! Last game we only started with 12. And the inquiries to join keep coming! Although the game can technically hold 20, I think any more than 16 would get rather cumbersome and crowded, so I propose to soft-cap it at 16. Now, its likely that a player or two might drop in the coming week or so, so I'll maintain a wait-list.
Anyone who has any thoughts on this, please feel free to weigh in. And if you've been meaning to get a friend into the game with you, this is your chance before its too late!

If more players won't cause any technical issues, I'm not averse to going up. I'm more concerned with player inactivity over the long haul. I'd hate to see the AI take over too many players as they get bored / drop out.

That's the real problem with going over 16: the more players, the more inactivity because there are more out-of-game events that disrupt the game. Its quite easy with so many players to always have some one asking for a temporary pause to the game, then the game speed drops to a crawl, then people get used to it, lose interest because its too slow...you see where that goes. NOTHING kills a game easier than a slow game where people are not getting their turns in on time. And its a big risk with more than 16 players, with 16 busy lives with 16 families and 16 jobs and 16 vacation periods, and countless other things that can disrupt it.

During People's Flexible time we will be more lenient of missed game turns, but we still expect everyone to make their best efforts to keep up with the game. If you don't get your turn in on time the AI will fill in for you on your turn. I warn everyone that the AI is awful and will screw with your plans. We want to keep a fast game pace, especially early game as the turns don't take much time at the beginning. When the turns start to take longer, we can extend the turn time.
Also, there is the added incentive that when everyone has submitted their turn, it will process. That means if everyone submits early, we can move faster. I am not expecting it, but it would be awesome if we could have a day, especially early where everyone is online and we can blow through 10-20 turns. I doubt we will be able to get all 16 for that though.

Update: with the arrival of Sylos, we are at the 16 player cap. Any further joins are going to be exceptional circumstances, such as Heber getting PvK to join the game. There will always be room for PvK!

Who is this mysterious figure? Should I prostrate myself? Perhaps a sacrifice?

PvK is the legendary creator of Proportions mod, and some other things in Space Empires. He also plays...Heber has played a few games with him. To summon him, we usually have to promise one newbie as a tributary sacrifice

Turns out I'm really bad at saying no to people, and our official count is...19 That doesn't mean we will end up with 19 players, a couple invites might drop/decide the game is not for them. Having said that, the last spot is reserved for PvK, and i'm not accepting any more applications to join the game at this point. I will however maintain a wait-list

I was not expecting to get this many people into a game, but that is pretty awesome. Large games are great for RP. We will make sure that there is enough space in the map for everyone.

Wow, 19 people! And a potential creator of the mod! This is shaping better than I expected!

I suppose the scarcity of new SE4 games greatly increases the demand for player spots on new games. It remains to be seen however if all those players do understand the philosophy of the mod and game.
