... is turning out to be exceptionally amazing!
I will admit, at first, when I learned about this on reddit I sent the message not really knowing what to expect. I knew I wanted to give it a try, I wanted to enjoy the RP aspect knowing that a game could exist above and beyond the goal of the 4X's. This being said, I had reservations. Ugh, a turn a day? Maybe two if we got lucky? Well, that sounded boring. It really did.
And now that we're actually doing? I find myself exceptionally engrossed in making my turns. I spend a good deal of time going through my construction queue, my research queue, I look at the ships I have - I double check what they are doing, and where they are going. On a solo game, I often find while I check these, I do not do so as thoroughly or intently and often am in a rush to End Turn.
I get excited downloading a turn, I will admit. Oh! What has happened, what have I seen?!? This last turns log was a good solid kick to the gut when I saw what had all been processed by the turn, but at the same time its exciting.
So what am I babbling on about? Well, this is more fun than I expected and I'm glad I was invited to join in!
Thanks.

SE4 Multiplayer is an entirely different beast than single player, even more so if there's roleplay involved. The only downside is that it keeps growing slow as the game progresses and empires are larger.
When everyone has met everyone in game it will become yet another completely different thing, including intrigue, backstabbing, diplomacy and alliances.

Yeah, I've never been able to play SE4 solo since I started playing it multiplayer. And as Heber said, the game will become truly engrossing once the diplomacy starts. Some of my favourite memories of the last Proportions RP game are the verbal barbs traded between the Tauron and New Earth diplomats

Well, certainly looking forward to it! Everyone knows Fight and Flight, few realize Posture and Submit (Grossman, 2004).

Unfortunately, in order to avoid a repeat of the first game attempt, I made the map so big that people are perhaps a bit too spread out. Its starting to look like players are wrapped together in scattered clusters with large swaths of uninhabited space between the clusters

I was wondering why I was so close to so many players...

... so we can be the bestest of friends forever and ever? (If only I had the Overly Attached Girlfriend meme ready... though I am a guy, don't want confusion!)

From talking to people, it sounds to me like there are roughly 3 clusters, generally separated from each other by a fair bit of space:
1. Skathari Principalities and I, as well as the Interstellar Trading Company somewhere south a fair bit
2. Aalien, Khizlek, Norak...and apparently the Imperial Hegemon
3. Solvani Imperium, D'Kali Hegemony, and Master System

At least the groupings are relatively even. Spread out would have been better, but this is entirely feasible as well. Plus, it is allowing for some early role playing.

Well, either you will be best friends forever and ever or you will be a province of another's empire forever and ever...
Having small clusters of two or three empires means you will have noone to scream to when your neighbor gets hungry.
Do we have a first casualty? What happened to the Adama guy?

I accidentally booted Adama, he'll be back.
While processing the turn, my wife's parrot decided to raid my keyboard. in the ensuing struggle, Adama's membership in the game became collateral damage
