... *awkwardly looks around* Yes... legit... My original experience with space empires was with a pirated copy of SEV around i think 2006 or 2007. I finally picked up legit steam copies of SEIV and SEV during the Christmas steam sale. Meh, I have no problem pirating games, but as I get older I find myself willing to pay for the connivence of steam, and I treating pirating as more of a demo type of process. Oh well, judge if you must, yarr

No judging at all. My copies are ancient and pirated, but I too purchase on steam. That has backfired a few times (looking at you, StarDrive!), but for the most part it's convenient.
I do miss picking up boxed games with printed manuals though... beautiful, large, thick printed manuals. Sigh.

Yeah, that dev and publisher really shot themselves in the foot with the 4x community. He is going to have to make some serious goodwill offerings with Stardrive Unity to have me do anything other than pirate his software (like a huge discount coupon for SD owners)

I know me and Nick started out with the shareware version of SE2 back in the day. We then moved onto the demo copy of SE3, which I distinctly remember taking about 45 min. to download the ~3mb file on our supremely shitty dialup internet at that time. I then bought my first copy of SE4, which I used until this game. I believe I still have it somewhere in a box in my basement. I looked for a while to find it, but just gave up and rebought it off of steam.
I have a copy of SE5 somewhere. It may have been lost in the ether of lost video game CD's between moves.

I have read something to that effect, free copy for the unity version, or something like that.

SE2! Holy Crap does that bring back memories. I had be given that, and one of the earliest versions of Rome on diskette I think. And if I recall, SE2 was missing a file such that when I went to go into combat, it'd crash. Much sadness followed. I think it was SE2 anyways... Was that the one where each shipyard allowed you to build a ship? I recall like a bar-like tracker for ship completion. I don't know... I could be on crack!
And yeah, StarDrive Unity... not so sure. To be honest, not pleased with Horizon either. I did back Predestination and hope that and M.O.R.E. turn out. I keep bouncing around 4x to play while playing this. I've loaded up Distant Worlds Shadows a few times, but... it just doesn't have what I want. I wish SE4 had SE5 politics.

I don't remember a bar tracker for ships. SE3 had that. I will pull up some screen shots.
SE2 could support a total of 4 empires in game. It had a total of 3 colony types which would generate different amounts of cash(no facilities on planets). you basically just built the best colony that the planet would support. Ship design was a little hilarious. Each shield point took up 1 space on the ship and ships had something like 20ish slots. We only had the shareware version, so we could only build up to cruisers. Weapons did something like 2-4 damage. It basically made shields useless.
It was so limited, but so awesome. I also remember we crashed it several times by having too many ships for it to process in combat. Good times.

I'll post screenshots when I get home. I can't access them from work.

That's fantastic!
I haven't found my copy of SEV since I moved here 1.5 years ago.

Yeah, it's just more convenient than pirating it. Older games don't always have a reliable number of torrent seeds.
Sadly, the money doesn't go to the original developer though since he sold the rights - but still.

Yeah, unfortunate. Would love to see an SE6, but no that won't ever happen. He is coming out with Space Captain, but not really my thing.
And yep, it was SE3 I was thinking of! I just found some pictures - very few though!
