5 seems the way to go. But the map should really be checked to make sure the desired distribution is achieved before we get 5-20 turns into the game and realize we failed!

When someone assigns randomized starting positions, the positions themselves are not randomized, they are selected. What is randomized is which player actually spawn there. So, the desired distribution will be ipso facto achieved.

The game will fill in a large planet of your type into the starting sector to which you're assigned. Hmm, I didn't know this was a thing! I guess this is why most people got a breathable world in their home system, but the Solvani and I had to fight over Tarsova/Xar'son. As for the distribution, I would agree that I don't like the idea of forcing people to pick planet types, but if most folks pick rock anyways...

The game only does this if you pre-assign an empty sector as a spawn point, but don't assign a specific player to it. Otherwise, the game will just find you a pre-existing large planet of your atmosphere/planet type and adjust the resource values. Once its identified such suitable spawn points, only then does it take spacing from other players into account.

Here is the future home of the next game: pbw.spaceempires.net/games/proprp3Note that as long as i'm the host, we will likely not be launching until the middle of June at the earliest, given my real life schedule. This gives you time to think about your next race, and also recruit and teach anyone else the game. Note that this does not automatically mean we will end this game.

D'Kali, the fact that you and solvani didn't get a breathable planet in your home system is just pure bad luck.
I encourage everyone to be very creative with their races for the next game. having a lesser used planet type is a large advantage for tech trading and territory expansion. It also makes for some interesting RP.

Indeed. having a lesser used atmosphere and planet type is...very...useful.

I agree with solution 5. To keep it fair we can just outline and reveal all those starting player positions - I mean astral telescopes are powerful enough on earth today that we can detect other worlds. In 400 years, it's more than realistic we would know where other neighbouring species were, but be unable to reach them or contact them.
That way, the selecting player has no advantage (perceived or real) over other players.

In 400 years, it's more than realistic we would know where other neighbouring species were, but be unable to reach them or contact them. That way, the selecting player has no advantage (perceived or real) over other players. As I see it, there are three solutions to this moral hazard. 1. "Hail Mary" - We place the randomized starting positions, and pretend like nothing happened. 2. "Sneak Peak" - We provide a system map showing where empires are located, but nothing else. It would just be like the map you regularly see in your lower-right window during regular play. 3. "The Full Monty" - We provide the map file to everyone. These three options express a trade-off on a continuum stretching from minimal exposure but maximum moral hazard ("Hail Mary") to no moral hazard, but total exposure ("the full monty"). Really, as one of the people likely to set the randomized starting positions, I don't think I'll indicate my preference.

There's a risk of never ending complaining about who got the best position and why this system is so much worse than the others.
Whoever takes upon himself to do this labor is destined to suffer.
